Overview
Intelligent Energy [IQe], led by Dr. Mischa Dohler, is a newly created area within CTTC dealing with pressing issues related to energy and shortage thereof. The highly qualified staff members of [IQe] concentrate on the two issues of 1) how to make the ICT sector itself more energy efficient; and 2) how the ICT sector can facilitate other sectors to become more energy efficient. As for the former, the ICT sector's power consumption is significantly improved by using latest energy-saving techniques from the domains of green radios, cognitive and docitive networks, femto cells, cooperative protocols, duty-cycling techniques, among others; improvements up to 30% have been reported with more impact generated by the team members by the day. As for the latter, the ICT's ability to provide ubiquitous communication is utilized in the context of the emerging paradigm of Smart Grids. Here, the group's immediate focus is on the efficiency of the functional blocks to deliver and manage natural resources in form of electricity, water, and gas. ICT's facilitator here is three-fold, i.e. a proper monitoring of the infrastructure by means powerline communications, wireless sensor and machine-to-machine networks; implementation of suitable control algorithms ensuring stability of the network; application of knowhow in demand-response approaches to allow for an efficient implementation of renewable energy sources, electrical vehicles, etc. These insights are equally applicable to other emerging domains, such as the one of Smart City. The [IQe] area is hence a very timely development within CTTC which, with energy being an omnipresent issue, stretches its activities across different OSI layers, technological ecosystems and areas within CTTC.
For Ph.D. students
The CTTC periodically awards 3-year Ph.D. fellowships to engineering graduates with good academic standing. The application process is usually open around June. Please check the CTTC web site for the next call. If you are interested in starting a Ph. D. thesis within the IQe Area, feel free to contact any of the IQe Area members for more information about possible thesis topics.
For engineering degree (M.Sc.) students
Doing your M.Sc. thesis at CTTC can be a very fruitful experience in a very active research lab. Students are provided with a workstation in the IQe lab as well as the necessary laboratory resources to carry out their work. Please note that, unless otherwise stated, no stipend is awarded Master students to carry out their thesis.
Post-doctoral grants
The CTTC periodically offers Post-doctoral fellowships. Please contact any of the IQe Area members if interested.
