Bio (English)

Jesús Alonso Zárate (Barcelona, 1980) received his M. Sc. (with Honors) and Ph. D (Cum Laude) degrees in Telecommunication Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC, Spain) in March 2004 and February 2009, respectively. In 2005, he was awarded by the National Telecommunication Agency (COIT) of Spain with the Best Master Thesis Award in ICT. In 2011, he received the UPC Award for his thesis read during the course 2008/2009 (Premi Extraordinari de Doctorat 2011).

From 2004 to 2005, he worked as an Information Technology consultant at Everis (former DMR Consulting). In 2005, he was granted by the Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) to obtain the Ph. D. on Signal Theory and Communications at the UPC.

While completing his Ph. D. degree, he was granted in 2006 by the European Space Agency (ESA) and by the Generalitat de Catalunya to attend the Space Studies Program (SSP'06) at the International Space University (ISU) in Strasbourg, France.

He has also been a visiting teacher assistant at the Escola Politècnica Superior de Castelldefels (EPSC) of the UPC during the second semester of 2007.

He is now with the CTTC holding a Research Associate position. He has published several scientific papers in renowned international journals (IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, etc.) and international conferences (IEEE ICC, IEEE GLOBECOM, IEEE PIMRC, IEEE VTC, etc.) over the last years and he has also participated in both public funded and industrial research projects. He is member of the IEEE ComSoc CSIM Technical Committee (Communication Systems Integration and Modeling) and works as reviewer and chair for numerous international conferences. He is part of the Editorial Board of the IET Wireless Sensor Systems Journal and supervises a number of graduate students and Phd Thesis. In 2011, he has been awarded with the Best Paper Award of IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) with a technical contribution towards the energy-efficiency of wireless communications.

Jesús Alonso Zárate (Barcelona, 1980) obtuvo los títulos de Ingeniero Superior (Matrícula de honor) y Doctor en Telecomunicaciones (Cum Laude) por la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) en los años 2004 y 2009, respectivamente. En el año 2005, obtuvo el Premio ALCATEL al Mejor Proyecto Final de Carrera en Multimedia de las Telecomunicaciones, otorgado por el Colegio Oficial de Ingenieros. En 2011, recibió de la UPC la distinción al Premio Extraordinario de Doctorado 2011 por su tesis doctoral defendida en el curso 2008/2009.

Durante el año 2004 trabajó como consultor tecnológico en Everis (anterior DMR Consulting). En Febrero de 2005, el Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) le otorgó una beca de cuatro años de duración para realizar los estudios de doctorado dentro del programa de doctorado del Departamento de Teoría de la Señal y las Comunicaciones dela UPC.

En 2006, la Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA) y la Generalitat de Catalunya le concedieron una beca para realizar el Space Studies Program (SSP) de la International Space University (ISU) en Estrasburgo, Francia.

En 2007, colaboró como profesor visitante en la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (en el campus de Castelldefels) impartiendo la asignatura de Sistemas de Transmisión Digital.

Actualmente, Jesús Alonso Zárate es investigador asociado en el CTTC. En los últimos años ha publicado varios artículos científicos en prestigiosas revistas de impacto (IEEE Communications Magazine, IEEE Transactions in Wireless Communications, etc.) y ha presentado numerosas ponencias y tutoriales en varias conferencias internacionales como IEEE ICC, IEEE GLOBECOM, IEEE PIMRC, IEEE VTC, etc. En Junio 2011, recibió el Best Paper Award de la prestigiosa conferencia internacional IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) celebrada den Kyoto, Japón, por su contribución a la evaluación de la eficiencia energética de esquemas de transmisión cooperativos. También participa de manera activa en diversos proyectos de investigación subvencionados con fondos competitivos de la Unión Europea y del Gobierno de España, así como en redes de excelencia para comunicaciones sin cables (NEWCOM y NEWCOM++). Es miembro del Comité Técnico del ComSoc IEEE CSIM (Communication Systems Integration and Modeling) y colabora como revisor y chair en diversas conferencias. Actualmente, forma parte del Editorial Board de la revista IET Wireless Sensor Systems y dirige varios proyectos finales de carrera así como estudiantes de doctorado de la UPC.

MACSWIN: The MAC Simulator for Wireless Networks

Since the year 2004, we have been working in the development of a C++ based simulator for the evaluation of Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols.

It is the MACSWIN, and it can be downloaded at the MAC Simulator for Wireless Networks Site.
